Highway Contracts Manager


Job Summary

Murrill Construction Ltd deliver various works from high volume, low value Highway Maintenance works to high value Public Realm, Town Centre Regeneration, Civil Engineering and Resurfacing works. Implemented under predominantly term contracts for several local authority Clients. The services are delivered through a mixture of directly employed staff supported by specialist sub-contractors. We are based in Greenford, with a term contract for London Borough of Ealing and have a satellite yard in Hemel Hempstead where we stock materials for contracts in Watford, Stevenage and more. 

The Highway Contracts Manager’s role is key to ensuring these schemes are delivered to the best of our ability, to the client’s satisfaction, on time and within budget. This requires a highly motivated and enthusiastic member of the team, well experienced in the Highway Maintenance & Civil Engineering Industry. 


Responsibilities and Duties

Overall responsibility for short/medium term planning and organisation of operational resources

Ensuring that services are carried out to quality standards and in keeping with Client KPIs

Ensuring that costs are controlled in line with the budget

Managing all aspects of Health and Safety in the workplace with the assistance of the company SHEQ Manager and liaising with Local Authority managers.

Play a lead role in growing the business by identifying opportunities to provide additional and new services

Building and maintaining positive relations with the Client, ensuring good communication and formal reporting as required to senior Client Officers

Attending internal meeting with Management and reporting to Directors

Attending external preconstruction meetings with Client & Designers

Overseeing the Company’s contract delivery (quality, cost and performance)

Ensuring contractors carry out the works to a high standard and within contract specification

Project managing a range of highway schemes

Providing timely status reporting to the Board of Directors

Provide quotations/estimates for clients before works begin

Assist with the financial and quality submissions within tenders

Any other reasonable management request  


Qualifications and Skills

Proven ability, experience and skills in managing and implementing predominantly Local Authority Highways term contracts

Able to provide sound leadership to a team of managers/supervisors, ensuring they provide high standards of service

Previous experience of budget preparation and control

Excellent ‘hands-on’ organisation skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing

Ability to multitask and perform well under pressure

Commercially astute

Able to deal professionally and credibly with the general public and with senior Local Authority officers and managers

Previous experience and ability as a proven Highway Contract Manager. Particularly for local authority contract delivery which is essential for this role

Minimum of HNC/HND qualification in Civil Engineering or equivalent 

CSCS Managers Card & NRSWA supervisor are desirable
